Woody’s Winter Word: June is Not So Far Away

Posted: February 2 2018

February is cold and wet
No need for shorts and Ts just yet.
But summer’s coming, it will be here soon
As chilly spring becomes blistering June.

Planning for camp 2018 is well underway. The staff is coming together and the boys are signing up. There is so much that goes on in the off-season to help make the summer a success it is. It looks like 2018 will be bigger and better then ever. So what makes a great summer?
First and foremost it is you, the campers, the guys who will fill the cabins with your energy, life and laughter. Without you there is no camp, because it is you who ARE camp.
Looking after you will be the counselors. They have been hand-picked from the many hundreds who apply for a job at CM. They are the best of the best, and they will bring with them their expertise, enthusiasm and character.
We will, of course, be well fed in the best mess hall in the North Woods. Camp seems to revolve around the meals, and we will eat very well indeed. The kitchen staff, no matter whether they are cooking, cleaning or preparing will be a very important link in the camp chain this summer.
To make sure everything is working as it should, there will be Craig. Craig joined us in 2017 as the new Head of Maintenance. He has been doing a sterling job ever since. No job seems to be beyond him. Indeed, he is up at camp, right now, in the dead of winter toiling away on all manner of projects. His can-do attitude is infectious, and we all owe him a big thank-you for the great work he does. You are definitely going to see some new things this summer, courtesy of Craig, and I will not spoil the surprise by telling you what those are just yet.
Bringing all this together, and taking full responsibility, is Jason. This will be Jason’s 4th year in sole charge – where did that time go? – and camp has been stamped with his own unique way of doing things. His very able leadership and knowledge of camping is helping to take Menominee forward with ever increasing numbers wanting to come and join the CM experience.
To complement Jason’s leadership, and helping to form the ‘tone at the top’, is the admin team. Thomas and Pamela Adler bring their many years of North Woods camping experience to bear; Jeff Toombs, from Canada, will be back for his milestone 10th summer; Jeremy Kohlenbrener will be back at the waterfront where his good reputation continues to grow, and joining the team at the top for 2018 is Josh Ingram, who will be coming back for his milestone 5th year and his jacket. As editor and writer of Woody’s Word, I, too, will do all I can to help make sure that the summer of 2018 is the best yet.
That’s what makes a great summer.
Bring it on!!
As ever….WOODY!
