“Much silence has a mighty noise.” Old Swahili proverb
Another late night last night, although it was worth it. The counsellor softball team went over to St Germain to play the guys from Kawaga, and unlike last year, this time we came home with a win, a big win. 15 – 0 was the final score. So that’s 2 – 0 in the sports series thus far (we won volleyball earlier in the summer). Next up is basketball this coming Friday.
Meanwhile, back at camp, Green and White is in full swing. Yes, we’ve started it a little earlier than usual, but that’s ok. We have a lot of stuff to do with this competition, not least of all the Sing, so it’s as well that we’re underway. The Greens are leading the way right now having won Vroom, our big flag-gathering-running-in-the-woods event. I have no idea how it works, but the boys seem to love it, and it keeps them busy for over an hour. After that came Creatively Acquire the Energy Source. Both teams face off against each other on the soccer field, and it’s a race to the middle to steal (acquire) the energy source (an old tennis tube wrapped in tape) and bring it back to your side without getting tagged. The Greens won that, too. I’m beginning to wonder if these teams have been chosen in such a way as to halt the White winning streak (nine right now, I believe). It remains to be seen, and with many events left to contest, just how this plays out.
This afternoon it was Runners and Chasers. With so many boys here this session, we had to create a BIG field for them to play on, and even then it was a squeeze. Having big numbers can create problems, but what great problems to have! I love this game. It is all action from the word go with boys weaving and running and ‘crashing’ through the line as each team attempts to stay out there for as long as possible. I’m awaiting the confirmed result on this (penalty points to be deducted I believe), but having watched the whole thing, I’m not optimistic about a White victory. I hope I’m wrong.
After dinner last night, we all went into Wasserman Hall for the Town Hall Debate to decide who will run camp on Wednesday next week. That’s right folks, we hand over the reins of power to the campers for one day only (although closely supervised, I can assure you). Select members of the Senior cabin will assume the roles of myself, Jason and Jeff as they run the show for the day. They have promised much – in order to get elected – so we shall see if they can deliver on those promises.
There was great excitement, especially amongst the younger boys this morning when the concrete truck pulled up to pour the concrete for the ‘new’ paddleball court. I say new, but it’s really an enlarged version of the one we just smashed out between cabins 6 and 7. The old one was beset by cracks and wear-and-tear after many years of almost constant summer use, so we felt it was time to start anew.
I’m writing this as the girls from Camp Chippewa are gathering to leave after our colour-run social this evening. The boys love to host, and this has been a great social.
So that brings me up to speed with everything we’ve done so far. I am still waiting on the MSM results, so when I get those I’ll write about them. Hey, we have three days of unbroken sunshine coming our way tomorrow through Saturday according to the local weatherologists. It’s going to get cool at night, but that’s ok. Cool nights and hot days are great camp days.
As I hear the girls screaming and singing as they board their buses, I know that all is well, so safely rest.
Goodnight everybody.
As ever…WOODY!
