So it wasn’t to be, try as we might. 39-34 to Kawaga was the final score, although we finished with a flourish with a 16 softball sweep. It was a great competition played in the right spirit and in the right way. Snaps to both camps for helping to coach and teach our campers the right way to play and compete. Compared with Monday, we had an almost perfect weather day to play. The sun shone and it was not too hot. Both teams went for it straight out of the blocks, not least of all 16A soccer who kicked off at 9.30. A 3-1 win for the boys in green set the tone, and that fighting spirit and determination was seen all over the courts and fields all day long. But sometimes, no matter how well you might play, the other team might just be that bit better than you, so it is not always a shame to lose to a stronger, better opponent. There is no shame in losing if you played well and fought hard. No-one likes losing (do they?), but someone always has to, so it’s as well to learn from the loss and make good the next time. And next time we do ‘battle’ with the boys from out west, everyone will be a year older, a year stronger and a year wiser. I’ve seen many losses and many wins in my time here at the Friendly Confines, and while winning is soooooo much better, I’m always prepared to accept defeat, learn from it, and move on. People are already saying, ‘ we’ll get ’em next year.”

But one competition does not make the summer. We still have a lot of camping to do, and we will be doing that over the next week or so. We might have lost this one, but all is well, so safely rest.
