WOODY’S WORD 29th July 2013

‘There is nothing that can help you understand your own beliefs better than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child’. FRANK CLARK

I often refer to Monday as ‘Magic Monday’ for no other good reason than I like alliteration. But it also helps us deal with the one day of the week that people fear beyond all others. Why? Should we not be glad that we made it through the weekend (and all that that entails) and we are ready to start afresh? I love Monday’s, magic or otherwise. In fact I like all the days of the week, especially those that involve Green and White and cement signing. Yes, that’s what we’ve been doing today. The cement truck was here nice and early and the fresh cement was ready to sign by 10.00. Under a beautiful blue sky and a hot sun we all gathered round the new sidewalk to make our mark for posterity. This is an old camp tradition that will endure. When alum come back to visit – often after many years away – they always head for where they made their mark all those years ago, and the memories come flooding back. Just as we are keeping those camp fires burning, so we are continuing another great camp tradition.

This afternoon we played Vroom, a now classic Green and White event. It involves a lot of running around the woods with squirt ‘guns’ and flags. Although I’m not 100% sure how it works and what is going on, the boys seem to love it, so who am I to argue? Give them a squirt gun (an old plastic sauce bottle to be exact) and they will have fun. In fact, the more ‘guns’ and different colored liquid the better. Boys will be boys.

We got back into some Twilight League this evening – always a popular thing to do après dinner – and after Canteen we all sat around the lakeside campfire to listen to the multi-talented Koz – our waterfront director – play his many instruments and sing some classic songs. We might be a competitive sports camp, but we believe there is still room for some of the more traditional camp stuff in our schedule.

That brings magic Monday to a close and all is well, so safely rest.

Goodnight everybody.

As ever…WOODY!
