“Whether one is twenty, forty or sixty: whether one has succeeded or failed today: whether yesterday was sunny or cloudy or cold, each new morning means that life begins afresh.”
July 4th! Happy Birthday America! Happy Birthday Koz! Dennis ‘Koz’ Kosloski was our waterfront director for some 42 summers before he retired in 2014. In January 2023 he was taken from us much too early. But his great name lives on (and will live on forever) here at CM. He wrote his name into the record books, and while there might be very few people left here at camp who can remember him and worked with him, his legacy is such that everyone has heard of him and knows what kind of man he was. Some say that every camp has a Koz, but I am happy and honoured to say that we had the only Koz, the best waterfront director in the Northwoods, and one who will never be forgotten.
Much as Koz was born on the 4th July, so it was that on the 4th July 2009, Alan Wasserman, the son of the founder of Camp Menominee, Nate Wasserman (and his wife Edna) died upon this day. So the 4th July is a poignant day for those of who bleed green. A special and memorable day for all sorts of reasons.
I’m writing this as the boys are finishing their night at Camp Marimeta, our erstwhile sister camp across the other side of Eagle River. We go there every summer at this time for a social and fireworks. It is always a great night, and I expect them back within the next half hour or so. Before we went, Jason and Melanie were kidnapped by a renegade collection of British patriots from both camps. They were blindfolded and taken away to Marimeta for interrogation. Once there they were tied to the flagpole awaiting rescue from the American militia. In a very short skirmish, the Brits were overwhelmed and Jason and Melanie were released unharmed. British and American (B & A) has begun!
With the release of the American leader, all is well, so safely rest.
Goodnight everybody.
AS ever…WOODY!
