Happy Birthday America! Happy Birthday Koz!! For the many years that I have been associated with Camp Menominee, we have always celebrated Dennis ‘Koz’ Kozloski’s birthday on the 4th July. Koz was a 42 year veteran here until his retirement in 2013. He was the waterfront. He was the trip-week canoe guy, and he epitomised every ideal that we hold dear here at CM. Koz was lost to us in January 2023 after a short illness, but he will be warmly remembered by the many thousands of men and women around the world who were fortunate enough to be taught by him, to be befriended by him and to have spent a summer with him here on the shores of Sand Lake. Rest in peace, Koz; your legend lives on.

With British and American dominating the schedule today, the final outcome of this camp classic came down to Message to Garcia this afternoon. It was 2-2 going into this, and I’m awaiting the final points to see whether it was the British or the Americans who prevailed.

The boys have been over at Camp Marimeta on the other side of Eagle River tonight watching fireworks and socialising with the ladies there. We have a long history with one of the best girls’ camps up here. Our founder, Nate Wasserman was also responsible – with his wife Edna – for founding Camp Marimeta back in the 1940s, so for many years, with Nate here and Edna there, we were effectively brother and sister camp. Although that familial connection no longer exists, we do remain good friends with the guys in red and white at Marimeta (ooh, ah!)

And so ends our third week of the summer. It’s gone so quickly; we’ve had so much fun, and maybe that’s why it’s gone so quickly. And maybe that’s why all is well, so safely rest.
