Woody’s Word 4th July 2023

“Don’t underestimate the seductive power of a decent vocabulary”.

July 4th! Happy Birthday America, and Happy Birthday Koz! Dennis “Koz’ Kosloski was our waterfront director for many, many years until his retirement back in 2014. Even after his departure we would call him on the phone on his birthday and sing Happy Birthday to him. There were campers and staff alike who had never met him, but they all felt they knew him as the shower house down at Sand Lake is called Koz’s House in his honour. And so we sang Happy Birthday to him again today, even though the occasion was marked with sadness as Koz succumbed to illness back in January of this year and is no longer with us to take that phone call. But his name will live long in the annals of CM history. He was, and will remain, just, ‘Koz’, to the many thousands of people who have been touched by his wisdom, his instruction, his loyalty, his knowledge, and his love of Camp Menominee.

British and American continued with the All-Camp Squirt Gun fight this morning. It was hot running around the golf course in long pants and long sleeves, but they are a must if you are going into the woods. There were some epic stand-offs and some exciting clashes with those plastic squirt bottles, but in the end, once all the points had been tallied up, it was the British who had proved themselves most adept at ‘firing’ coloured water at their opponents. That made it 2-2 at lunchtime, with only the classic, Message to Garcia, to decide who would win overall. Both games are similar in that they both involve running around with squirt bottles, although Message is played over a slightly wider area. I’m waiting for the final result of Message to Garcia, so more on that tomorrow. As I write this Word tonight, the boys are over the other side of town at Camp Marimeta, our long-time ‘sister’ camp. For as long as I have been here, we have always got together with the girls from the other CM on July 4th. There will be music, dancing, games and fireworks, and if I get this published in the next ten minutes, then I will get to see the fireworks, too.

The weather has been kind to us today. Even if it has been very hot and quite humid, we have done everything we planned to do, and the day isn’t over yet.

Our trips start going out tomorrow. All the boys will be going somewhere in the next three days, so I look forward to regaling you with some trip stories soon. Wherever they go, you know that all is well, so safely rest.

Goodnight everybody.

Asd ever….WOODY!
