“When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road your trudging seems all up hill,

When life is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.”

We’re here at camp on a wet and windy Thursday night, at the half way point of the competition, and we find ourselves 14-3 down. I was going to write 13-4 down, but the reality is a little worse. We found ourselves in a similar position last year (some of you might recall), and we came back to win the whole thing with the final at-bat in the 16A game. I fear that this might be a higher mountain to climb this time around, but we will do our best. And we have been doing our best thus far. I mean, we haven’t been bad, it’s just that they have been that much better. It happens. We spoke about determination and hanging in there, and that is what we will be doing tomorrow. Do we have a choice? We could quit, but we won’t, although we will rest.

The late, great Brian Clough (the legendary manager of Nottingham Forest football club in England) was once asked what his team had to do in the second half in order to beat the opposition they were playing that day.  In typical Clough style, he simply replied that they had to score more goals than they did (and they duly did just that). Sometimes the simple and effective message is what is needed. We have to win more  games than they do is the message we have imparted to the boys tonight. Simple,eh. It is the logical answer to the predicament we find ourselves in. It’s a big ask, but we do have a lot of games still to play, so we are going to go for it.

It didn’t help that the weather intervened, especially over at Kawaga. They had the start delayed by the rain, and the rain duly headed east to hit us this evening. And it hit us pretty good. It allowed us to blow Taps early (9.30), and that is a good thing. 14-3 down, maybe, but all is well, so join us in safely resting this evening.

Goodnight everybody.

As ever….WOODY!
